How do dermal fillers work?
Dermal fillers replicate a naturally-occurring sugar in your skin. We use the world’s safest and most reliable dermal filler, and it is injected just under the skin using a very fine needle. The treatment is relatively quick, and incorporates local anaesthetic for added comfort. Your aesthetic medical professionals will consult with you to help you decide which filler is best suited for the results you want, and depending on the filler the effect can last for 6 to 9 months or up to 2 years.
Generally used on the lower half of the face, to counter issues such as nose to mouth lines, dermal filler is a gel that it injected just beneath the surface of the line or wrinkle to plump it out, resulting in a smoother, more youthful surface. It’s exceptionally effective at gently smoothing lines and creases that appear as your skin ages.
Dermal fillers are also great for subtly enhancing lips. Whether you are looking to smooth out smokers lines, your lips are starting to thin, or you have just always dreamt of having a fuller smile – our leading medical experts can help you to achieve the lips you have always wanted.
Lip enhancement treatment is quick and relatively painless, as our fillers incorporate a local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort.

Which areas of my face can dermal fillers treat?
Dermal fillers are generally used on the lower half of your face, so for areas such as lips, cheeks, chin and mouth. For example you can add volume and reduce wrinkles around the mouth, plump out your cheeks, and smooth lines. Dermal fillers can also be used to add volume to thin skin on the hands, or crêpey skin across the upper chest (décolletage) area.
Here are some common issues that dermal fillers can assist with reducing/eradicating
- Nasolabial folds (lines between the nose and the corners of the mouth)
- Marionette lines (from the corner of the mouth downwards)
- Lips (enhancing their shape, definition and volume), and treating smokers lines
- Cheeks (to restore structure and support to the mid-face, creating a natural lifting effect)
Advanced treatments include:
- Tear troughs
- Lateral brow
- Non-surgical rhinoplasty
- Jaw line
What is dermal filler and how does it work?
Dermal filler is a replication of naturally occurring sugars in your skin. Made up as gel, dermal filler naturally plumps and fills.
Your skin is made up of three vital layers: the hypodermis, the dermis and the epidermis. The hypodermis, the deepest level of skin, consists of fatty tissue, which cushions the layers above it, and protects the organs below it.
Immediately on top of that is the dermis, which contains collagen and elastin – two key attributes that keep skin looking young. When you are young they are constantly renewed, but the production slows down as you age.
The epidermis, which is the top layer of skin, is where cell renewal happens! In younger skin, cells are replaced every 15-30 days, but this slows to every 60 days as you age.
Dermal filler is placed into the dermal layer of skin and replaces lost volume and treats static facial lines by replenishing the natural hyaluronic acid content of the skin.
Should I choose Lip Filler or Lip Enhancement? What’s the Difference?
Lip Fillers and Lip Enhancement are exactly the same thing. They both achieve the same goal. Here at Elite Aesthetics we improve your lips’ fullness, definition and overall shape with lip fillers such as Juvederm Vycross giving natural looking, well defined lips.
Which dermal filler should I choose?
While there are many dermal fillers available, here at Elite Aesthetics, we select the most effective, safest, and long lasting fillers. Your specialist clinician will advise which is best for you, and your goal.
We use the Juvederm Teosyal RHA Vycross range – which are one of the best available products.
When will I see the effects of my dermal filler treatment?
The result of your treatment will be immediate, just walk out of our clinic with your fresh, younger looking results!
How long do the results of dermal filler treatment last?
While it will depend on your treatment and lifestyle factors, generally Juvederm Vycross and Teosyal RHA products last up to 18 months.
Do I need an initial consultation before a dermal filler treatment?
Our clinicians will always provide a consultation before treatment, as we want to really understand your aims and objectives, while ensuring that you are comfortable and understand the treatment that you are receiving. You can usually have the consultation and treatment within the same appointment.
Does Having Dermal Filler hurt?
Our most popular dermal filler, Juvederm Vycross, has an in-built anaesthetic called lidocaine which enhances comfort. We can also use anaesthetic cream or a dental block if you’d prefer.
The needle used to inject dermal filler is very fine, and less painful than say, a dental anaesthetic injection.
Will I get a so-called trout pout with dermal fillers?
No. Famous cases of these resulted from permanent lip implants – not the non-permanent dermal fillers we use here at Elite Aesthetics. In addition to this, our clinicians truly understand skin anatomy and will achieve exactly the result (however subtle) that you require.
Will the dermal filler become hard or noticeable to touch?
No. We use the most premium fillers which take on the characteristics of your body tissue so the filler will not become hard or noticeable. The only thing you will notice are the great results!
How many injections will I need?
You will usually require 4-6 injections per area of the face treated. Your expert clinician will talk you through the process both as part of the consultation, and while the treatment is taking place, so you will know exactly what to expect.
How long does Dermal Filler Treatment Take?
Treatment is usually completed in around 15 – 30 minutes, although we do require that new customers have a 45 minute appointment. This is to ensure that we have time to consult with you about your desired outcomes, how the dermal filler treatment works, and make sure you are comfortable and informed.
Are Dermal Fillers Safe?
Dermal fillers are safe. Very rarely treatment can result in an allergic reaction (only in around 1 in 20,000 cases), but dermal fillers can be reversed using another injection, though the need for this is extremely rare.
What Aftercare at Home Will I Need To Consider After Having Dermal Filler Treatment?
There is no required recovery time when having dermal filler treatment, so you can leave our clinic and go straight back to your normal activities. However it is recommended that for the first 24 hours you avoid excessive alcohol, direct sunlight and exercise, so do plan for this when choosing your appointment.
What Happens to Dermal Fillers Once the Result Fade and Where Does it Go
The gel used in dermal fillers is naturally broken down and gets reabsorbed by your skin – it doesn’t stay in the body indefinitely!
When Dermal Filler Results Fade – Will my Skin Look Worse Than Before Treatment?
Absolutely not! When the treatment fades, your skin will go back to how it looked prior to treatment. This myth comes about as people get used to the results and forget the appearance of lines before the treatment.
Are There Any Bad Side Effects When Having Dermal Filler Treatment?
As with all beauty and cosmetic treatment, there can be side effects.
With dermal filler treatment, most possible side effects are related to the process of injecting into the skin, rather than the filler itself. These side effects could include redness minor swelling, and itching.
Those who are prone to cold sore may have a slightly increased chance that one will occur after the filler treatment.
Very rarely the blood supply from the smallest blood vessels can be disrupted and cause scabs to form, and in even rarer cases scars.
Allergic reaction to filler treatment is exceptionally rare (around 1 in 20,000).
Is There Anyone Who Should Not Have Dermal Filler Treatment?
If you are a woman who is pregnant or breast feeding you should not have dermal filler treatment. Also, people with severe allergies or a history of anaphylaxis should avoid dermal fillers. If you are taking any blood thinning medication such as Warfarin or Heparin, you should not have dermal filler treatment.
