Menopausal Hair Loss – What Can You Do About It?
If you’ve noticed your hair getting thinner – or even bald patches appearing – as you’ve got older, you’re not alone. Menopausal hair loss is a frustrating and common problem, with more than 50% of women over 65 noticing a thinning of their hair.
But why does it happen and what can you do about it? Let’s find out…
What Is The Menopause?
The menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her fertile era comes to an end. For most women, it occurs around the age of 45-55 and it can last anything from 4-10 years.
As the menopause hits, egg production stops and your ovaries release fewer hormones. These hormones are a key part of what allows your body to regulate your oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone. This huge hormonal change results in many physical, mental and sexual changes in your body.
Menopause is well known for its hot flushes, skin changes, insomnia and mood swings – but can also cause your hair to thin or fall out too – known as menopausal hair loss.
What Causes Menopausal Hair Loss?
Research suggests that menopausal hair loss is due to the huge changes that occur in your hormones as you go through this process.
During the menopause, your sex hormones – oestrogen and progesterone – start to decrease. These hormones play two roles in the maintenance of healthy hair: they help the hair to grow faster and fall out slower. When your oestrogen and progesterone levels drop, your hair starts to grow more slowly and becomes thinner.
When these hormones decrease, it also triggers an increase in the production of androgens – a type of male hormones including testosterone. These shrink your hair follicles which can result in hair loss on your head. It’s these same androgens that can also cause more hair to grow on your face too!
So the reduction in oestrogen and progesterone makes your hair grow slower and shed faster, and the increase in androgens can make your hair more likely to fall out.
But if you’re suffering from menopausal hair loss don’t despair – there are treatments that can help you.
Treatments For Menopausal Hair Loss
BHRT & Menopausal Hair Loss
BHRT is a menopausal hair loss treatment that uses bioidentical hormones created from natural sources to rebalance your hormones as you go through the change.
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is a bespoke treatment that gives you a unique and personally tailored solution to your menopause symptoms – including menopausal hair loss.
You’ll first have a thorough consultation in which we’ll learn all about you and your menopause problems. This information combined with blood test results will help us to create a unique combination of oestrogen, testosterone, progesterone, DHEA, thyroid hormones and Vitamin D3, specifically tailored to match your needs.
Because bioidentical hormones are structurally the same as your body’s natural hormones, there are considerably fewer side effects associated with BHRT than synthetic hormone menopause treatment.

Viviscal Professional For Menopausal Hair Loss
Viviscal professional is a nutritional supplement that’s been clinically proven to reduce hair shedding and increase hair thickness, making it a great, drug-free treatment option for menopausal hair loss.
Using a powerful and unique combination of AminoMar CTM, a rich marine protein complex as well as other hair-boosting ingredients such as biotin and apple extract, this drug-free supplement helps to fortify and promote healthy hair growth from within. Giving your body the nutrients it needs to grow thicker, healthier hair.
Due to the strength of Viviscal Professional, you can’t buy it online – it’s only available from selected stockists and medical professionals. While there are other Viviscal supplements available over the counter, Viviscal Professional contains more of the ground breaking, proprietary marine complex AminoMar® than Viviscal Extra Strength and contains apple extract, L-cysteine and L-methionine, three ingredients not found in any other Viviscal product.
PRP Hair Treatment
PRP hair treatment (also known as Vampire hair restoration), is a ground breaking, non-surgical and highly effective procedure that harnesses the power of your body’s own platelets to generate hair growth.
PRP treatments have been used for decades to stimulate healing. When used for menopausal hair loss the PRP hair treatment can stimulate dormant hair follicles and encourage them to grow once again. Giving you thicker hair and reducing bald patches.
The treatment process is very simple. First, we draw some of your blood like in a blood test. This blood is then placed in a machine that separates out the platelet-rich plasma. We apply a local anaesthetic then inject the plasma into the areas you wish to treat.
In the following months, your hair will start to grow faster, look thicker and shed slower – helping to combat the signs of menopausal hair loss.
