What is a Thread Lift?

This procedure involves the use of temporary sutures, which are used to produce a subtle but visible “lift” in the skin, which smooths and reduces the signs of ageing in the face, neck, and jowls. These threads are made from a material called polydioxanone (PDO), which is where the procedure’s alternative name, PDO threads, comes from. These threads are used to pull the skin tighter while also stimulating the natural production of collagen. The results are a significantly younger, firmer appearance.

This is a far less invasive option than a traditional face lift. Instead of removing the patient’s loose facial skin surgically, the cosmetic surgeon simply suspends it by stitching up portions of it. The threads are inserted under the skin’s surface into the sub-dermis, where they anchor to the skin, keeping it in place as the threads are raised to create that lift.

The popularity of the PDO thread lift stems from its ability to produce natural, though worthwhile, results. Subtler than a face lift – and with a much shorter recovery time – PDO threats give long-lasting results that fight all the common signs of ageing. For many people, recovery takes just a couple of days, while results last between 1-2 years!

How PDO Threads Work?

From the age of around 25, collagen production in the skin slows down and continues to decrease as we age. Collagen is the substance that gives your skin its elasticity, strength and bounce—creating that smoothness and firmness that we associate with a youthful complexion.

This reduction in collagen causes your skin to lose some of its elasticity, resulting in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and sagging of the skin.

If you wanted a facelift effect for many years, then surgery was the only way to go – thankfully, that’s no longer the case. The thread lift has revolutionised the aesthetic industry, giving people a safe, effective alternative that offers impressive immediate results, and improves skin condition and stimulates regeneration.

The PDO thread lift for the face works in two ways: it uses a drawstring-type effect to pull the skin tighter, and stimulates the natural production of more collagen.

Whether you want to improve the look of your eyebrows, nose, lips, cheeks, jawline, neck, or eyes, the theory is simple. Your aesthetic doctor will carefully insert the thread around the edge of your face, neck, or the area you wish to treat. Once complete, the threads are gently pulled to lift and tighten the skin, providing an instant, more youthful appearance.

While you will have instantly visible results from the PDO thread lift treatment, the full benefits are visible after 6-12 weeks when your body has had time to regenerate and produce new cells.

The Benefits of a Thread Lift

While other threads can physically lift your skin, PDO threads are unique in providing an immediate physical lifting effect and biologically stimulating the natural production of collagen.

PDO has been used in the medical field for many years in suture thread, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, drug delivery, cardiovascular applications, and tissue engineering. It’s highly compatible with the body and completely biodegradable, making negative reactions very unlikely.

As a result, PDO threads help to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production processes, giving the skin back its strength and elasticity.

This unique combination of mechanical lifting and cellular regeneration is what makes the PDO Thread Lift so powerful, giving people immediately noticeable results and long-lasting regeneration.

Is a Thread Lift Right For Me?

Are you fed up and frustrated with loose, saggy skin, but worried about the (at times) drastic results of a surgical facelift? Do you want a lower-risk, quicker way to reduce wrinkles and give your face a natural-looking lift without going under the knife? If so, PDO threads could be the answer.

There’s never a ‘one size fits all’ treatment that will represent the best option for everyone, but a thread face lift is definitely one of the most versatile options we offer. One thing all our clients have in common? The desire to see natural results that enhance and work with their natural beauty, rather than drastically altering their facial structure and trying to erase years of smiles, frowns, and everything in between. Our PDO thread lift results (down below) speak for themselves.

Thread Lift vs Face Lift

Surgical facelifts are still the most obvious option for fighting loose, sagging skin around the face and jowls. While they have a spotty reputation for creating overly drastic results, plenty of facelifts from skilled surgeons have produced very strong results that truly enhance the patient’s natural bone structure and beauty. Nevertheless, a surgical face lift is a very invasive procedure, and the downsides include:

  • A long recovery time
  • At times, quite drastic results
  • Higher risk of infection, nerve injury, and scarring
  • A longer procedure
  • A higher cost
  • The added risk of anaesthesia

PDO threads is known as a revolutionary alternative – a non-surgical face lift treatment that offers you the results of surgery without the pain, recovery time or risks associated with traditional cosmetic surgery. Not only do the threads lift the skin and reduce sagging and wrinkling, but they also stimulate a collagen production response. Collagen is one of the most important proteins for keeping skin looking plump, youthful, and smooth.

With treatments like PDO threads fast becoming popular, it’s no surprise that The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported a 44% drop in traditional facelift procedures in 2018 alone!

How Much Does a PDO Thread Lift Cost in the UK?

The procedure can range from anywhere from £800-£2,400 depending on how many threads are needed.

What Should You Look for in a Practitioner?

Thread Lifts are a regulated treatment by the CQC. Ensure that the clinic is CQC registered and has an experienced doctor. At Elite Aesthetics, we have over 10 years of combined experience in thread lift treatments.

Do We Do a Thread Lift for Eyes (Fox Eyes)?

While we offer Thread Lift for Eyes, primarily to help lift hooded eye lids without the use of surgery, we do not offer the celebrity trend for ‘Fox Eyes’, as we specialise in natural-looking results.

How Long do PDO Threads Last?

Thread lift results will depend upon the type of thread being used. The latest thread by APTOS can last over 3 years as they not only lift the skin but also encourage collagen regrowth.

How do I prepare for the treatment?

In the run-up to your thread lift treatment, you can continue your usual face care routine, but there are a few things to avoid if you want the best results.

It’s best to keep your skin hydrated before the procedure, so drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and smoking for the week before treatment where possible.

For 24 hours before your treatment, you will need to avoid blood thinners such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen or Aleve. This helps to reduce the risk of unnecessary bleeding or bruising following the treatment.

What Should You Expect?

On the day of your treatment, your aesthetic doctor will mark the areas to be treated and apply a local anaesthetic to help keep you comfortable. The thread is then inserted into the skin and gently put into place.

After inserting the suture, the doctor will then apply slight pressure on the treated area to reshape the surface of the skin, smoothing and tightening it for instant, visible results.

The treatment usually takes around an hour, so you can fit it easily into your busy schedule. The lifting effect is immediate, with the full results continuing to develop in the coming weeks as your body creates new collagen.

Do PDO Threads Hurt?

We use local anaesthesia, so you won’t feel anything during the procedure. During your recovery, you may feel some discomfort, but this is minor compared with other, more invasive treatments and rarely lasts more than 2-3 days.

What Is The Advised Aftercare?

As the thread lift is a non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure there’s usually no recovery period required, and you can get back to your day as soon as you leave the clinic.

You will need to avoid wearing makeup for 1-2 days to give your skin time to recover. It will be necessary to sleep on your back for around 7 nights. You must also avoid high-impact sports, saunas, dental treatments and facial or beauty treatments for several weeks while your skin fully heals.

You may experience slight bruising or discomfort for a few days after the treatment, but this is usually very mild and dissipates very quickly.

What is a Silhouette Soft Thread Lift?

A Silhouette Soft Threads are different from PDO Threads in one special way, they are injected with HA, which further stimulates collagen production.

Silhouette Soft is a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment to redefine facial contours with immediate results.

How long does silhouette soft thread lift last?

The lifting effect of the Silhouette Soft treatment is immediate since it results from the compression of tissues and elevating the skin when the sutures are being implanted. This effect will improve as post-procedure swelling subsides and may last for between 18 months to about two years.

Can a thread lift break?

It’s quite rare for the thread lift to break a thread provided that you follow the aftercare guidance. An experienced thread lift doctor will know exactly where to place the threads and how many are required. With this in mind, please ensure that your doctor is exceptionally qualified and experienced in thread lifts.

Is a Thread Lift Better than Filler?

It depends on what results you’re hoping to see – and how fast. For an instant result, we’d recommend opting for fillers, with visible results within a week, rather than the PDO Thread lifts which can take slightly longer for the full results to show once the new collagen and elastin in the skin has formed.

What is the Difference Between PDO Threads and Brow Lift?

Brow lift using PDO threads is another non-surgical, minimally invasive cosmetic procedure designed to provide a more youthful facial appearance without the need for downtime.

How Many Years Does A Thread Lift Last?

Thread lifts generally last between 12 and 18 months. However, this depends on the individual patient and their age, lifestyle, skin type and how quickly their body breaks down the sutures.

Which Thread Lift For Face Lasts The Longest?

PDO threads have been around longer and are made from a biodegradable synthetic polymer that has been used in surgery for many years. PDO threads are absorbed into the body for 6 months by hydrolysis and work by activating fibroblasts to produce more collagen in a specific area.

What are the Risks of a Thread Lift For Face?

Thread Lifts carry minimal risk if performed by an experienced doctor in a CQC registered clinic such as Elite Aesthetics.

What Problems Can a Thread Lift Help With?

The Thread Lift for the face is one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for instantly treating the visible signs of ageing. This non-surgical facelift threading gives you an immediate, natural-looking lift while also helping to regenerate and improve your skin on a cellular level for a long-lasting result.

While many people desire a neck thread lift, a cheek thread lift or an eyebrow thread lift, this is the perfect treatment for:

  • Lifting loose or sagging skin on the cheeks, jowls or under your eyes.
  • Smoothing fine lines such as forehead creases, crows feet and frown lines.
  • Tightening the skin on your jawline and neck.
  • Improving the appearance of wrinkles and deeper lines on the lower face, including nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
  • Creating instantly visible results without going under the knife.
