Sunken Eyes from Dehydration

Dehydration is a common culprit when it comes to sunken or dark skin around the eyes. This is because the skin around your eyes is very close to the underlying bone, and a lack of fluids can cause blood vessels to become more prominent.

Are Sunken Eyes Permanent?

Most cases of sunken eyes relate to the quality of an individual’s nutrition and healthy living. When these causes are corrected, sunken eyes can resolve without further treatment. This means that causes can be avoided or treated in good time to prevent the recurrence of sunken eyes. However, there is a chance that permanent sunken eyes can occur naturally as part of the ageing process, where elastin and collagen reduce over time. This can be resolved with the use of fillers which encourage new collagen to be generated.

What Causes Sunken Eyes?

Did you know that your eyes are the first part of your face to show signs of ageing? This commonly manifests itself as Dark Circles around your eyes. There are a number of causes, including discolouration, some of which can be traced back to genetics. For example, if your parents are prone to hyperpigmentation.

The skin around the eye is called the periocular region and is particularly thin. Allergies such as hay fever can commonly affect the skin around the eyes, making it feel tender or sore. Rubbing your eyes repeatedly can lead to the appearance of dark circles. Sunken eyes are common and to be expected with the depletion of volume as we age naturally.

Some other causes that can contribute to dark circles include lifestyle habits such as excess alcohol and salt, lack of sleep and dehydration. Discoloration is very difficult to prevent.

Tear troughs that are deep set can give the impression that a person is tired even when they have plenty of sleep. The tear troughs will recede as part of our natural ageing process, alongside a reduction in collagen and elasticity in your skin. Also, the cheekbones and eye socket bones also start to recede over time, resulting in a loss of bony support for the skin.

Sun damage is common as the skin around the orbit of the eye is particularly delicate. Exposure to UV rays without appropriate sun screen and protection will make the skin become loose and the texture uneven, further casting a shadow and making the eyes look sunken.

A high quality sunscreen designed for the face will make a significant difference in preventing sun damage. Being aware about sunscreen and making it a habit to wear will significantly delay the ageing process. Some simple protection, such as sunglasses and a wide brim hat can also assist in providing shade. This has the added benefit of protecting your eyes from the damaging UV light.

Hi, Alex here,Just had my Lichen treatment today with Dr Shirin,The whole team at elite are very friendly, comforting and understanding, and did everything they could to give me a wonderful and welcoming experience. They are all so kind, friendly and knowledgeable, world experts at what they do. I am lucky to have them near London. They are also super responsive on the phone and email, so I know they care about thier patients, and I'm very well taken care of, (as with other clinics I have been to, its often difficult to get them to respond to questions), but this clinic is the most responsive I have ever seen!This is a beautiful and wonderful place and I highly recommend it, and I will be recommending it to all my friends as well. Yesterday I had a 'body sculpt' session, to help lymphatic drainage. I was zipped into a suit up to my waist. This massaged and lightly squeezed my feet, ankles, calves, thighs and abdomen. I was breathing oxygen rich air via nasal tubes. It was very relaxing and I slept really well last night. Thank you Elite Aesthetics.
