How To Get Rid Of Sunken Eyes

Suffering from hollow, dark-circled eyes? Found yourself Googling ‘How to get rid of sunken eyes’? You’re not alone. With the increase in online meetings, people are finding that they are spending more time looking at their faces than ever before and in doing this, they notice aspects of their appearance that they may find unsatisfactory.

Sunken eyes are one of the more common issues that patients here at Elite Aesthetics come to us with. In this blog post, we’re going to talk not only about how to get rid of sunken eyes, but what causes them in the first place.

How To Get Rid Of Sunken Eyes

What Are Sunken Eyes?

Before we can get on to how to get rid of sunken eyes, we need to first understand what sunken eyes actually are.

Sunken eyes are characterised by the under-eye area looking shadowed with sagging skin and a crepey texture. While the appearance of sunken eyes can vary from person to person, the overall result tends to make you look tired and sometimes ill.

The skin below your eyes is more delicate than anywhere else on your body, so suffers the most from the effects of ageing. One of the key aspects of ageing skin is the loss of elastin and collagen. It’s these two elements that help to keep your skin looking plump and smooth, so as they deplete, the skin around your eyes has less fleshy support, sinking to rest on the eye socket.

Sunken eyes, or eye hollows, as some call them, can make you feel self-conscious, particularly as it’s difficult to cover with make-up. But what causes your under-eye skin to look more drawn and loose?

Sunken Eyes: The Causes

Ageing

As mentioned above, ageing plays a huge role in the appearance of your skin. Think of collagen as a network of fibres that give your skin support – as you age these fibres lose their density, and as a result, your skin begins to ‘sink’ into the areas without structure. These are wrinkles and lines, and as the skin around your eyes is very thin, crows feet and sunken eyes appear.

Your body’s creation of collagen and elastin slows down from about the age of 25, so while sunken eyes can be a product of ageing, they can appear as early in life as your late 20s.

Dehydration

Everyone knows that the best way to maintain healthy skin is to keep hydrated. The NHS Eat Well Guide suggests that we should drink around 6 – 8 glasses of fluid a day – plain water is best, but it does include fruit juices, milk and other beverages. It’s worth bearing in mind that caffeine can cause your blood vessels to constrict and can inhibit the delivery of antioxidants, so it’s good to mix your tea and coffee intake with other drinks too.

Genetics

Sunken eyes can be hereditary. If you notice that any of your parents, grandparents or extended family also have sunken eyes, then chances are it runs in your family. It could be the position of your eyes, the size of your eye sockets or even the texture of your skin – if sunken eyes are in your DNA, you might be wondering how to get rid of sunken eyes – don’t worry, there are plenty of solutions that can help.

Lifestyle

Your lifestyle can exacerbate or increase the effects of decreased collagen production. Sun exposure, too much alcohol, smoking and poor diet can all make sunken eyes look more prominent.

How To Get Rid Of Sunken Eyes – Home Remedies

If you want to know how to get rid of sunken eyes at home, there are different home remedies you can try – but realistically, you won’t notice any drastic results. While success can be limited, you may see a mild difference with repeated use.

Here are some ideas often suggested to reduce the appearance of dark hollows beneath your eyes.

  1. Drink water – as already mentioned, there is no substitute for the power of water. Your body prioritises hydration, with your skin’s moisture being one of the first to be depleted when you’re dehydrated. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids every day.
  2. Good skincare – investing in a quality day and/or night cream gives your skin a daily boost of moisture, vitamins and other helpful nutrients. Look for a cream that includes retinol for a daily dose of anti-wrinkle power. And don’t forget an SPF is essential.
  3. Eat well – ensure that you eat leafy green vegetables as often as you can. They’re rich in antioxidants and vitamins that help maintain healthy, glowing skin.
  4. Sleep well – dark shadows are made worse by burning the midnight oil. When you’re sleep-deprived, your skin can look pale, sallow and dry.
  5. Gentle massage – a gentle facial massage can help to improve blood flow and stimulate lymph drainage. Soft tapping around the eye area is enough to get circulation in the area. Never drag the skin though – you can do more harm than good!

How to Get Rid Of Sunken Eyes – Non-Invasive Treatment

If you find that treatment at home isn’t helping to alleviate the appearance of your sunken eyes, then a non-surgical solution might be the answer. Sunken eyes can be lessened with tear trough filler – a dermal filler that’s applied to the area beneath your eyes.

The filler, which is made from hyaluronic acid, a protein that occurs naturally within your body, gently restores volume to your eye area. The results of the tear trough filler treatment are apparent immediately and last up to 12 months. Following treatment, your face will look brighter, more youthful and awake.

The treatment is painless and very quick, the sensitive area under your eyes is numbed using an anaesthetic, and then the dermal filler is injected. There’s no downtime required, so you can get on with your day – you’ll just look more well-rested while doing it!

Home treatment can also have limited success in treating sunken eyes, due to the lack of structure under your skin. If you’re looking to eradicate your sunken eyes, then tear trough filler really is the best option.

Had a consultation with Elite yesterday, I must say I was a bit nervous, but Dr Shirin was so friendly and helpful.
I was given lots of advice and was given treatment options that were within my budget.
A few weeks after the P Shot I've really started to see a difference and have gained my confidence back.

Thank You!

Elite is an outstanding professional clinic with high standard treatments. All the staff members are friendly and offer you honest opinions when it comes to products and treatments. This is a welcoming clinic that I can 100% recommend. Treatments are spoken through and explained in detail, also aftercare. I have been going nearly a year now and am happy with all the treatments I’ve had, wouldn't go anywhere else. The Bocox treatment started to work within a few days, which I was surprised about. So glad I went to Elite for treatment.

Thank you Dr Shirin, the O Shot has really helped me with my Lichen Sclerosus. I'd heard about the treatment on the LS Facebook Groups and message a few people that had treatment with Dr Shirin. I was like many in the group who had run out of treatment options and using creams on a daily basis. I have to say a few months after treatment, I can see a real positive change and I'm hoping my LS will continue to improve. Dr Shirin did say that I might have to have a second treatment given how severe my case is.

Welcoming, reassuring, friendly, professional, high tech. I shall be back for more. I love the results of the Thread Lift I had.

Hi, Alex here,Just had my Lichen treatment today with Dr Shirin,The whole team at elite are very friendly, comforting and understanding, and did everything they could to give me a wonderful and welcoming experience. They are all so kind, friendly and knowledgeable, world experts at what they do. I am lucky to have them near London. They are also super responsive on the phone and email, so I know they care about thier patients, and I'm very well taken care of, (as with other clinics I have been to, its often difficult to get them to respond to questions), but this clinic is the most responsive I have ever seen! This is a beautiful and wonderful place and I highly recommend it, and I will be recommending it to all my friends as well. They definitely deserve the super high reviews they are getting, so I'm happy to add another one! A Big thank you from me and my family for all you have done for us during this journey!

Yesterday I had a 'body sculpt' session, to help lymphatic drainage. I was zipped into a suit up to my waist. This massaged and lightly squeezed my feet, ankles, calves, thighs and abdomen. I was breathing oxygen rich air via nasal tubes. It was very relaxing and I slept really well last night. Thank you Elite Aesthetics.
