What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is the process of regenerating essential collagen that supports the skin using tiny needles to perforate the top layers of the epidermis.
The treatment is carried out using a special device called a derma pen or dermaroller. This innovative device creates micro channels in the skin, kickstarting the skin’s natural healing process, leading to new collagen production for firmer, more radiant skin.
What Does Microneedling Do?
A quick look at our microneedling before and after images below will show you just how effective the treatment is! In basic terms, microneedling stimulates the production of new collagen. But how, you ask? In the words of microneedling fan Jennifer Anniston, “Here’s the science bit…”
When the skin suffers a trauma, your body responds by producing collagen to heal the area – microneedling harnesses this process to rejuvenate and refresh your skin.
The tiny needles create micro punctures in the first layer of your skin. In response, your body begins healing by generating collagen. This new collagen not only reconnects any tissue that has been broken, but it also increases the plumpness of the skin, which helps to diminish wrinkles, lines and scars.
What Are The Benefits Of Microneedling?
So, what are the benefits of microneedling, before and after treatment? Microneedling is non-invasive and the process is much like getting a facial. You can relax in our beautiful clinic while you receive your treatment. There’s very little preparation required – just clean, dry skin. We recommend microneedling to rejuvenate your skin, as well as a treatment for skin conditions. Microneedling can;
- Brighten dull skin
- Reduce scarring from acne, surgery or burns
- Lighten dark circles
- Plump wrinkled and lined skin
- Reduce large pores
Will I Need Lots Of Treatments?
To see the best microneedling before and after results, it’s best to have a course of treatments. This is dependent on factors such as what you are treating and your desired outcome.
For example, conditions like severe scarring may require multiple treatments, but a simple skin refresh will need less. During your consultation, our aestheticians will discuss what you want to achieve and how best to get there.
How Long Does Treatment Last?
The treatment is a fairly quick process, lasting up to an hour. With little skin preparation needed, this treatment can be carried out during a lunch hour or easily slotted into a busy day.
In terms of how long the effects of the treatment will last, that varies, but you can expect to have smoother, more plump skin for many weeks.
Following treatment, your skin will be more receptive to creams and topical treatments so you can prolong the results by using your favourite products. Maintaining good hydration by drinking plenty of water is also a factor in soft, supple skin.
Is Microneedling Painful?
One of any new patient’s main concerns is if the microneedling process is painful. We’re happy to report that based on many, many client testimonies we can say that it’s a pretty painless experience. Some areas we treat will feel more sensitive than others, but the discomfort is minimal and doesn’t require any anaesthetic.
Following treatment, you may find your skin feels more delicate but this will pass within a couple of days. It’s essential that you avoid direct sunlight and avoid exfoliating and alcohol-based skin products for a few days, as these can aggravate your skin.
Here at Elite Aesthetics, we use one of the industry’s most cutting edge tools – the Derma FNS. This device features a unique needle retraction function, which means that each surgical-grade needle is fully removed from the skin rather than dragging the surface, as some other derma rollers can do. This ‘catching’ or ‘dragging’ can cause additional skin trauma and add to your healing time, something that’s avoided with our advanced equipment.
Is Microneedling Safe?
Microneedling is incredibly safe. The treatment itself poses no risks, and as long as your aftercare is maintained, there is no risk of infection. The simplicity of microneedling is one of the reasons it’s so popular with both celebrities and ‘regular’ people alike.
When Will I See The Results?
This treatment needs a little time to take effect. The production of new collagen begins immediately but doesn’t achieve its full potential until about 6 weeks afterwards. If you are undergoing a series of sessions, then each session takes place at this point. You’ll notice an improvement in your skin following each treatment, but optimal results can be seen at the end of your treatment schedule. For general skin rejuvenation, this is about three sessions but for more complex conditions, this can be more.
We have seen incredible transformations and know that microneedling is one of the most effective solutions for treating ageing, scarred or dull skin.
Just look at this microneedling before and after photo, you can see the dramatic improvement in this client’s skin.
What Does Microneedling Cost?
Microneedling is very affordable, with single treatments costing from £250 and a course of three sessions costing £700.
Who Is Microneedling Suitable For?
As you can see from our microneedling before and after images, this treatment is suitable for most skin types.
Since it doesn’t use chemical peels or lasers, there’s no risk of pigmentation issues making it ideal for dark skin tones. Microneedling can be used to combat the effects of acne, ageing and sun damage – we treat people from all walks of life, from their 20s right up until the later years.
It’s not a suitable treatment for pregnant women, those that suffer from eczema or find they scar easily. Dr Shirin can guide you on the best treatments for you if you fall into any of the above categories.
