Vaginal Dryness: Causes, Symptoms & Cures
Vaginal dryness is an embarrassing, painful and frustrating problem. But if you’re suffering, you shouldn’t feel ashamed.
More than half of all women struggle with vaginal dryness at some point in their lives. So while it might feel like a taboo subject, you’re certainly not alone.
But how do you know if vaginal dryness is the cause of your discomfort? What causes it? And most importantly, what can you do about it?
Symptoms of Vaginal Dryness
You might think that vaginal dryness is pretty easy to spot – surely it presents as dryness in the vagina? Well, yes, but sometimes it’s not quite so obvious.
Commons signs of vaginal dryness include:
- Feeling sore or itchy in and around your vagina
- Experiencing pain or discomfort during sex
- Needing to urinate more often than usual
- Noticing an increase in urinary infections
- A reduction in sex drive
If you’re experiencing any of the above then it’s possible that vaginal dryness is to blame. While it might feel a little embarrassing to talk about, it’s actually a really common problem.
So why does it happen?
Causes of Vaginal Dryness
The most common cause of vaginal dryness is the menopause. As you reach the end of your fertile era, some significant changes start to occur.
Egg production stops, your ovaries start to release fewer hormones and your body no longer performs its usual functions to regulate your oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone.
This huge hormonal shift can have a big impact on all aspects of your body – physical, mental and sexual.
Now, as with most hormonal issues, some women sail through menopause without hardly noticing, while others suffer for years or decades with mood swings, hot flushes, hair loss and menopausal skin problems. To find out more about other menopause problems check out our previous blog post here…
But how does menopause cause vaginal dryness?
As with most menopausal problems, it comes down to oestrogen levels.
During or after the menopause your oestrogen levels drop. These lower levels of oestrogen can cause the tissues of the vulva and the lining of the vagina to become thinner, drier, and less elastic. Vaginal secretions are reduced, decreasing lubrication and resulting in vaginal dryness.
Other things that decrease oestrogen levels include;
- Breastfeeding
- Smoking
- Depression
- Stress
- Childbirth
- Chemotherapy
- Excessive exercise
- Removal of the ovaries
Overenthusiastic cleaning practices such as douching, strong soaps and perfumes can also cause temporary dryness, itching and irritation.
Treatments For Vaginal Dryness
Vaginal dryness is unpleasant, uncomfortable and embarrassing. So what can you do about it?
The solution to your problem will depend on the cause of your vaginal dryness. If you’ve recently given birth or you’re breastfeeding then it’s likely to be a temporary problem, which will resolve once your hormones rebalance.
In the meantime, avoid perfumed soaps, wear cotton underwear and use a lubricant to make sex comfortable and avoid causing damage to the vaginal tissue.
If your problem is more long term – such as menopause, stress or an unknown cause – then you should consider getting some professional support.
The O-Shot For Vaginal Dryness
The “O-Shot” is a revolutionary treatment from the creator of the Vampire Facelift. It can help you to resolve vaginal dryness, quickly and easily.
But that’s not all! The O-Shot can help increase sexual pleasure, make orgasming easier, reduce discomfort during sexual intercourse and even resolve urinary incontinence.
This non-surgical treatment uses your body’s own natural platelets to stimulate vaginal rejuvenation and increase your natural vaginal lubrication.
Using a traditional venous draw method, like in a blood test, we take some of your blood and place it in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma. This is then injected into areas of the clitoris, labia and upper vagina.
While injecting your vagina can sound a little scary, it’s actually a safe and comfortable treatment. PRP treatments (which is essentially what the O Shot is), have been used extensively on other areas of the body for many decades with great success.

BHRT For Vaginal Dryness
If the menopause is the cause of your vaginal dryness, BHRT could be a great solution for you. Menopause symptoms rarely come alone – if you’re struggling with vaginal dryness then it’s likely you’re suffering from other unpleasant menopause problems too. BHRT can help give you control over your hormones and bring balance to your body once again.
BHRT is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment for vaginal dryness caused by hormonal imbalances. Using bioidentical hormones created from natural sources, we can help to rebalance your hormones as you pass through the menopause.
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is unusual because unlike many “one-size fits all” menopause therapies, it gives you a unique and personally tailored solution to match your symptoms.
With BHRT a specially qualified doctor will give you a thorough consultation to ask you all about you and your menopause problems. They then combine this information with some hormonal blood test results to allow them to create a unique combination of oestrogen, testosterone, progesterone, DHEA, thyroid hormones and Vitamin D3, specifically tailored to match your problems and correct your imbalances.
Many people are wary of HRT because of the side effects that can be associated with it. But BHRT is different.
Because bioidentical hormones are structurally the same as your body’s natural hormones, there are considerably fewer side effects associated with BHRT than synthetic hormone menopause treatment.
