Labial Hypertrophy: When to Seek Treatment and What to Expect

Labial hypertrophy (an enlarged labia) is a common condition that affects women. However, many women suffering from it either feel unable to talk about it or are unaware of the range of treatments available to them.
It can seriously affect confidence and well-being, leaving women feeling self-conscious and impacting intimate relationships.
The good news is that several treatment options are available. Elite Aesthetics offers safe and effective labial reduction procedures to help women feel more confident and comfortable in their bodies.
What is Labial Hypertrophy?
Labia are unique in shape, size, and colour. However, some vaginal conditions can affect women in ways that make life more challenging. Labial hypertrophy is one such condition.
The labia minora are the inner lips of the vulva surrounding the opening of the vagina. Hypertrophy means they are enlarged or elongated. Women with labial hypertrophy have larger labia that can protrude beyond the outer labia.
Labial hypertrophy can occur from birth or develop later in life due to childbirth, hormonal changes or ageing.
When to Seek Treatment for Labial Hypertrophy
Many women find labial hypertrophy doesn’t impact their life at all; however, for some women, it can affect them both physically and mentally. The most common times women ask for help are when the following occurs:
Physical Discomfort
If you are experiencing pain or chafing during exercise, sexual intercourse or wearing tight clothing, then you should speak to your doctor. Some women also experience difficulty with hygiene, which can lead to further complications.
Emotional Distress
Even if you don’t experience uncomfortable physical symptoms, labial hypertrophy can affect you in other ways, such as feeling self-conscious and embarrassed in intimate situations.
What Treatment Is There?
The good news is that many treatments are available, so you don’t have to suffer in silence.
Surgical Treatment
Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape and reduce the size of the labia minora (inner vaginal lips) or labia majora (outer vaginal lips). There are two types of labiaplasty available: trim labiaplasty and wedge labiaplasty.
Trim labiaplasty ‘trims’ excess skin along the outer edge of the labia and then stitches them back up, while wedge labiaplasty involves removing a wedge or V-shaped section of labia at the widest point. After removal, the edges are stitched together.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that results in more downtime. However, most patients can return home the same day. This surgical procedure will not suit everyone, so you must consult a doctor about your suitability.
It is also rarely conducted by the NHS, so it will likely be an expensive private treatment option.
Non-Surgical Treatment
If the idea of surgery is unpleasant or simply not a viable option, you’ll be pleased to know that non-invasive options can provide very effective results.
UltraFemme 360
Ultra Femme 360 is an intimate health treatment designed to provide complete vaginal rejuvenation, including labial remodelling and vaginal tightening, using radiofrequency waves.
Six sessions are recommended; however, just one treatment is proven to enhance muscle strength, reducing the laxity of the vaginal walls. It’s an incredibly effective treatment for labial hypertrophy and can also help women with stress incontinence and menopausal or post-menopausal symptoms.
It reduces labial hypertrophy by tightening the vaginal canal and opening, pulling back protruding labia and ‘neatening up’ the appearance. It also increases natural collagen production, which can help to improve your orgasms and reduce dryness, making it a popular treatment for many women!
An FDA-approved radiofrequency device is inserted into the vaginal canal and gently moved along the whole length of your vaginal canal towards the cervix and back to the vaginal opening. While this might sound unpleasant, the device is actually smaller than a speculum commonly used when you get a smear test, and a lot less uncomfortable.
The device emits radiofrequency waves throughout the length of your vaginal canal and it is these waves that penetrate into the tissue gently raising the temperature of the cells to over 40°C. The internal treatment lasts for approximately 8 minutes, while the external treatment can take up to 20 minutes, depending on your individual treatment plan.
O-Shot
This treatment is a natural remedy that harnesses your body’s growth factors to stimulate healing and rejuvenation. It uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to rejuvenate the vagina and is another popular choice for treating labial hypertrophy. PRP is derived from your blood, made into a serum, and strategically injected into the treatment area.
The serum is made by spinning a small amount of your blood in a high-speed centrifuge. This process separates the platelets in the blood, resulting in what is known as PRP.
The O-Shot specifically targets the vagina by stimulating stem cells to generate new tissue, including collagen and fatty tissue, both of which are essential for maintaining structure, lubrication, nerve endings, and blood vessels. This treatment helps improve labial hypertrophy by stimulating collagen production, enhancing the aesthetic vaginal appearance, and reducing laxity. It also results in thicker vaginal tissue, heightened sensitivity, and increased blood flow to erogenous zones, potentially improving your overall sexual experience.
What to Expect from Treatment at Elite Aesthetics
Here is a breakdown of what to expect when you receive treatment from Elite Aesthetics:
Consultation
You will be invited to a consultation to discuss concerns and goals. Your doctor will need to examine the area to recommend the most suitable treatment.

The Procedure:
UltraFemme 360 and the O-Shot are both non-surgical procedures performed in the clinic with minimal discomfort and downtime. They usually take up to 1 hour, but the exact timing will vary depending on your personalised treatment plan. This will have been outlined during your consultation.
Recovery:
You can typically return to normal activities immediately following both treatments. However, you might experience mild swelling or redness, but it will subside quickly.
